President of Egypt

The President of the Egyptian Republic (Egyptian Arabic: رئيس جمهورية مصر) is the executive head of state of Egypt and is responsible for appointing the official head of government under the Egyptian Constitution of 2014. The president is also the supreme commander of the Armed Forces and the head of the executive branch of the Egyptian government.

History

Since the abolition of the monarchy in 1953, Egypt has had six presidents. The first president was Mohamed Naguib, followed by Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat, Hosni Mubarak, Mohamed Morsi, and the current president, Field Marshal Abdel Farrah el-Sisi, who took office on 8 June 2014.

The first president, Mohamed Naguib, along with Gamal Abdel Nasser, led the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 that overthrew King Farouk and ended the Kingdom of Egypt. After Naguib's resignation in November 1954, the office of president remained vacant until Gamal Abdel Nasser was elected in January 1956. Nasser served as president until his death in September 1970.

Following Nasser's death, Anwar Sadat became president and served until his assassination in October 1981. He was succeeded by Hosni Mubarak, who was in office for nearly 30 years until he was forced to resign in February 2011 during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011.

Subsequently, Mohamed Morsi became president in June 2012, but he was removed from office in July 2013 following mass protests. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who had served as Defense Minister under Morsi, was elected as president in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. In April 2019, presidential terms were extended from four to six years, allowing President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to run for a third term in the 2024 election. He won the 2023 presidential election and was inaugurated in April 2024.
