What to Expect

  • When visiting Alexandria, a must-see attraction is the catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa. The tour begins with a pickup from your hotel.
  • The site of Kom el-Shoqafa features a fascinating collection of tombs, statues, and archaeological artefacts that reflect the influences of Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and early Imperial Roman cultures. The unique characteristics of Kom el-Shoqafa blends Roman, Greek, and Egyptian elements with statues depicting a mix of Egyptian and Roman styles. The catacombs, constructed during the 2nd century AD, consist of a series of tombs carved into the bedrock. Rediscovered in 1900, this site provides a glimpse into the funerary practices of the time. Founded by Alexander the Great in 334 B.C., Alexandria served as the capital of Egypt for around 1,000 years and was a prominent city in the Mediterranean, second only to Rome. Today, Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and the largest city along the Mediterranean coast.
  • Explore Pompey's Pillar, one of the main attractions in Alexandria, Egypt. Despite its name, the pillar is not connected to Gaius Pompey, the Roman general and consul. It is a triumphal monument built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 300 AD. The real historical significance of this archaeological site lies in the presence of the Serapeum, an ancient temple dedicated to the god Serapis, which once stood at this location.
  • Certainly! Alexandria boasts a rich culinary scene, particularly in Egyptian cuisine. One can enjoy a delightful lunch at an Egyptian restaurant in Alexandria.
  • Additionally, in October 2002, the Library of Alexandria was reopened to emulate the magnificence of its ancient counterpart. This modern iteration is a stunning architectural marvel and a sprawling institution that integrates the arts, history, philosophy, and science. Furthermore, the library hosts diverse activities, serving as a platform for open discussions, dialogues, and the exchange of knowledge and ideas.
  • The next stop on your journey should be Fort Qaitbey, also known as the Citadel of Qaitbay. This 15th-century fortress, situated at the entrance of the Eastern Harbour on Pharos Island, was built by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qaitbay in 1477 AD as a defence against potential invaders.
  • Finally, visit the unique Roman Amphitheatre in Alexandria. While Roman amphitheatres are found in various parts of Europe and the Middle East, the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria is the sole remaining example in Egypt. As Alexandria is Egypt's second most important city after Cairo, this historical site holds great significance.
