What to Expect

• On Day 1 of your private tour from Cairo to Alexandria, your experienced Egyptologist will pick you up from your hotel at 7:00 am. You will then be transferred by a comfortable private A/C vehicle to Alexandria, located 220 km northwest of Cairo. Upon arrival around 10 am, your day tour of Alexandria will begin with a visit to the Roman Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa.
• The Catacombs Kom el Shoqafa is an ancient burial site dating back to the 2nd century A.D. It is a fascinating testament to the diverse cultural influences in Alexandria's history, including the ancient Egyptian kingdoms that date back thousands of years.
• Next, you'll visit your Pillar, a stunning 25-meter-high red granite column. Despite its name, the pillar is believed to have been built to honour Emperor Diocletian and is not directly associated with Pompey, the Roman general.
• Afterwards, you'll explore the citadel of Sultan Qeitbay, a 15th-century Islamic monument built to guard the city against the threat of Crusaders. The citadel was constructed using the ruins of the old Lighthouse, which was damaged during an earthquake in 1303 A.D.
• You'll enjoy a delicious lunch in an authentic Egyptian restaurant before continuing your tour with a visit to the new Library of Alexandria. This modern marvel was established in October 2002 as a vibrant hub of arts, history, philosophy, and science.
• The day concludes with a visit to Al Montazh Palace Gardens, an expansive and picturesque property overlooking Al Montaza Gulf. This complex also boasts five swimming beaches, offering a perfect opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment.
• Finally, you'll check your hotel in Alexandria for an overnight stay, reflecting on an enriching day of exploration and learning.
• On Day 2 of the trip, you will be picked up from your hotel in Alexandria at 07:00 and driven to El Alamein. El Alamein was crucial in controlling the North African coast, providing access to Egypt and trade routes to the Far East. During World War II, it was a battleground as Axis powers sought to dominate Egypt and disrupt Britain's sea routes.
• When in El Alamein, visit the small El Alamein museum about one mile west of the British Memorial. The museum houses war memorabilia and artefacts from the battlefield, including uniforms, weapons, and flags. It offers an insightful look into the area's historical significance.
• Next, visit the El Alamein War Cemetery, where thousands of soldiers from various nations are buried or honoured. The cemetery, designed by Sir Herbert Worthington, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war.
• Moving along, the German War Memorial, situated a few kilometers west of the Italian marker, pays tribute to the sacrifices of German soldiers. The Memorial's architecture and solemn ambience provide a moment of reflection and remembrance.
• Finally, go to the elegant white marble Italian Memorial, 5 kilometres beyond the German Memorial. This impressive structure pays homage to Italian soldiers, sailors, and airmen who lost their lives in the desert and at sea. It also houses a small museum and offers stunning views of the sea.
• Following the visit to El Alamein, the journey continues with a drive to Cairo.
