Tour to the Two Temples of Abu Simbel

Tour to the Two Temples of Abu Simbel

  • Abu Simbel's main attractions are the great sun temple of Ramses II and the temple of Queen Nefertari. The two Temples of Abu Simbel with their unique style are considered to be the masterpieces of ancient Egypt. The Temple of Ramsses II was dedicated to the four universal gods Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Re and Ramesses II himself. The great Abu Simbel temple is also called the Sun Temple of Ramesses II. The Temple of Queen Nefertari is also called the Temple of Hathor, who was the wife of the Sun God. So symbolically the two temples, the one of Ramesses II and the one of Nefertari, bring Ramesses II, Nefertari, Hathor and the Sun God together as one.

  • The impressive Abu Simbel temple, constructed by King Ramses II between 1264 BC and 1244 BC, is a remarkable masterpiece withstood time. This golden temple, also known as the Temple of Ramesses, beloved by Amun, is a testament to the grandeur and wonder of ancient Egyptian architecture. It was built to commemorate King Ramses II's victory in the Kadesh battle, honour his beloved wife Nefertari, and pay homage to the deities Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah. The temple's grandeur and the rich history it embodies make it a truly awe-inspiring sight.

  • The Temple of Hathor at Abu Simbel was built by Ramesses II (c.1279-1213 B.C.E.) to honour both Hathor as the goddess of love and music and his wife Nefertari as a deified queen. The facade, resembling a tower, has six statues that stand colossal (over 33 feet/10 meters high). On each side of the entrance, two statues of Ramesses flank one of Nefertari dressed as Hathor. The colossal statues are, in turn, flanked by smaller statues of their children.
