What To Expect

  • The Monastery of Saint Anthony is a significant Coptic Orthodox monastery in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, within the southern region of the Suez Governorate. Nestled amidst the Red Sea Mountains, it is positioned 334 km (208 mi) southeast of Cairo. The monastery was founded by the disciples of Saint Anthony, who is renowned as the first Christian monk. Notably, the Monastery of St. Anthony has played a vital role in shaping various Coptic institutions and has been instrumental in promoting monasticism. Over the years, numerous patriarchs have originated from this monastery, and it continues to attract hundreds of pilgrims daily.
  • The Monastery of Saint Paul, the Anchorite, has a long history, dating back to the fourth century AD. It was established over the cave where Saint Paul, the Anchorite, lived for over eighty years. The earliest account of the monastery comes from Antoninus Martyr, a native of Placentia, who visited the tomb of Saint Paul the Anchorite between 560 and 570 AD. Initially, the monastery was occupied by some of the disciples of Anthony the Great and later by Melkites, Egyptian, and Syrian monks. The presence of Syrian monks at the monastery seemed to have lasted until the fifteenth century. The monastery also served as a place of exile for the 70th Coptic Orthodox Pope, Gabriel II, for three years.

    Such a bless

I had a fantastic tour. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history of early monasticism. We visited both the monasteries of St. Paul and St. Anthony. My highlight was sitting on a doorstep with a holy older monk at St. Anthony's. Being that close to someone so holy touched me deeply. Additionally, touching the tomb of St. Paul is an experience I'll never forget.
